The determination of Objectives conditions the choice of materials, methods, and evaluation of results in all stages of foreign language learning. The first level is a necessary foundation, but by itself is insufficient for the study of literature or for communication purposes in a new linguistic milieu. The fundamental notion of language styles is proposed as the structuring principle of the more advanced level of instruction. Generally speaking, in a foreign language, students know what they are taught. Because the content of an advanced level course can be quite vast, what is taught depends on the objectives pursued. Whatever the syntactic or semantic content, it must be presented and learned in reference to language styles. For example, if the objective of the course is learning the written language and eventually literature, it is necessary to broaden the students' learnings in the direction of the more complex structural models of the written language. In conclusion, an example is provided of a course based on the notion of language style and corresponding to a situational reality. This course aims at preparing students to communicate effectively in situations in which government employees might find themselves. (AMH)
