Historical processes, cultural values and socioeconomic conditions that contribute to the current status of Hispanic families are examined in this book. The eight papers in the collection focus on selected aspects of the diverse roles and impacts of the family in Hispanic communities and explore the implications of these roles and impact for improved social policy and programs. Nearly all of the authors are Hispanic. "Hispanic Families: An Exploration" examines from a historical perspective the growth of the Mexican American, Cuban, and Puerto Rican populations in the U.S.; presents demographic data on the three groups; explores principal societal problems Hispanic families face; and discusses social policy issues and their impacts. "The Value of a Humanistic Model in Serving Hispanic Families" tells of a human service delivery model designed by Hispanics to serve Hispanic families. Presenting socio-historical overview of the current status of Chicanos in the United States, the third paper includes (1) an analysis of the negative manner in which social sciences have defined the Chicano, (2) the history of Chicanos in this country, (3) the development of the barrios, (4) the role of the Catholic Church, (5) an analysis of demographic data, and (6) an identification of major Chicano academic perspectives. Other papers deal with health of the elderly, problems of youth, dependent needy families, and role conflict in Cuban Mothers. (DS)
