Comparisons were made between Oakton Community College (OCC) fiscal year 1978 occupational graduates and occupational graduates of other Illinois public community colleges based upon a statewide follow-up study conducted in September 1979. The following areas were compared: evaluation of college services, impact of community college education, main educational objective and rate of goal attainment, present educational status, relationship of present field of study to community college program, employment status within one year of graduation, salary range of employed respondents, relation of job to community college program and reasons why it was not related, job location, job satisfaction, and evaluation of job placement assistance. Major findings, based on 7,773 statewide and 164 OCC respondents, indicate that: (1) both groups were dissatisfied with job placement and career counseling services; (2) OCC students were less interested in improving skills in their present jobs and more interested in self-development and transfer courses; (3) 38% of the OCC graduates were enrolled in school, compared to 28% of the statewide respondents; (4) fewer OCC graduates who were employed full-time earned monthly salaries in the $300 to $600 range than their statewide counterparts; and (5) 78.9% of the employed OCC graduates expressed job satisfaction, compared to 82.6% of the statewide respondents.
