Alberta Demographics and the Universities.
Braun, Shepard
University education in Alberta during the next two decades is addressed in relation to the increasing in-migration and uncertain participation. Although Alberta has the highest rate of net population gain among all provinces due to in-migration, it is not clear how many of the 18-24-year-old cohort will be job-seekers rather than potential university students. Three documents are presented that study the demographic and occupational demand trends and their potential impact on postsecondary enrollment in Canada and the Province of Alberta: "The Class of 2001," by W. Clark, M. S. Devereaux, and Z. Zsigmond; "Out of School--Into the Labour Force," by Z. Zsigmond, G. Picot, W. Clark, M. S. Devereaux; and "Summary of Canadian Occupational Forecast (COFOR) Model Results for Alberta, 1975-1982," by the Alberta Planning Secretariat. Focus is on demographics, postsecondary enrollment and participation rates, educational output and the labor force, and occupational demand in Alberta. Appendices summarize the reports examined. Figures and tables provide statistical data used for analysis. (LC)
