An account of the upheavals that have taken place at Fresno State College since the mid-60s are discussed by a professor who witnessed the course of events. Troubled with the same tensions and polarities of other campuses across the country due to such factors as the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam war, Fresno State fell victim to its problems. Letters, newspaper reports, memoranda, eyewitness accounts, court transcripts, legal briefs and numerous written materials combine to tell the story. Several events are offered as evidence of the educational decay: (1) competent administrators were fired and replaced by men of questionable ability and views; (2) faculty members were callously dismissed or threatened for disagreeing with the administration; (3) armed police officers removed a chairman from his office and placed the department under guard; (4) minority students and faculty were harassed by the administration, as well as meaningful minority programs discontinued; (5) the School of Arts and Sciences was broken into smaller and more ineffectual units without the consent of faculty, thus depriving the school of any campus power. Most of the court cases brought against the administration were decided in favor of the faculty yet none of the principal administrators were removed. It is suggested that the educational quality of the school has declined with no hope for revitalization in view. California politicians such as Ronald Reagan, S. I. Hayakawa, and Jerry Brown are portrayed as users of the higher education community for their own means. In conclusion the report hopes to serve as a warning to the higher education community that the "slow death" at Fresno State is not an isolated case but instead is representative of the condition on many American campuses today.
