Analysis of Reading Problems: A School Psychologist's View Point.
Blackman, Portia
A school psychologist describes techniques and approaches to accurately assess students' reading skills and determine what materials and methods should be used for instruction. Among formulas considered for estimating reading expectancy are mental grade and years in school formulas. Research is described which indicates that school psychologists should abandon their efforts to attribute reading difficulties to visual perception problems. Problems with standardized reading diagnostic tests, including the Gray Oral Reading tests, the Gilmore Oral Reading Test, and the Gates-McKellop Reading Diagnostic Test are discussed. The use of criterion referenced tests, such as the Standard Reading Inventory, the Classroom Reading Inventory, and the Botel Reading Inventory is advocated. Also addressed are formulas for predicting readability of instructional materials and methods for constructing informal reading inventories. The analysis of the students' oral reading errors via the Reading Miscue Inventory Procedure for Diagnosis and Evaluation is described. (CL)
