A course outline for teaching the basic elements of music at the junior high school level is presented. The course is divided into three units: rhythm and melody; harmony; and form. Each unit is sub-divided into concepts which deal with psychomotor and cognitive approaches. Activities for learning rhythm and melody include students' clapping the rhythm of school cheers, their names, poetry, the states, and television commercials. The concept of pitch is conveyed through tapping water-filled glasses, using resonator bells, and allowing students to experiment with string and percussion instruments. Students investigate harmony through singing chordal accompaniments and using the autoharp, and learn to transpose a composition into a higher or lower key. The final unit, form, compares contrast in a musical composition to contrast in poetry. An extensive list of appropriate music for listening and reproducible pages are provided.
