Thirty-seven sources, published from 1970 to 1979, which study male attitudes toward the changing role of women are documented. The findings are presented in nine sections which cover male socialization, the traditional male sex role, psychological conflicts, modern technology and the male sex role, male liberation, men in new professional roles, men in new family roles, male response to women's new roles, and public policy and men. The literature reveals that men have contradictory and ambivalent feelings toward women's new roles. They reflect a low opinion of housewives, yet a preference for their own wives to be home with the children. Also, men express boredom with women who are not intellectually stimulating, yet anxiety toward women more knowledgeable on a specific subject. Positive effects of the women's movement include single adoptive fathers, male involvement in childbirth, parenting courses, and family planning clinics. Negative effects include a refusal to recognize female achievement and a hostile power struggle to prevent women from gaining further. A major conclusion is that legal issues will have an impact on influencing sex roles in the future. A bibliography of works consulted is included. (Author/KC)
