The volume presents five research papers and sixteen reports of research in progress which examine the relationship of women to work, family roles, and support systems. The papers examine internal factors influencing women's goals, racial differences in why women work, how work and family roles are integrated, class differences as determinants of women's educational choices and their resultant position in the marketplace, wage differences, and differences in values and social competence across generations. Results indicate that current occupational segregation patterns, with the majority of women in low-pay, non-technical jobs, is a result of both employer discrimination and school and family socialization. Also, women may be less attracted to non-traditional fields because of lack of flexibility in work arrangements. Further, white men completed more than twice the amount of on-the-job training than black men, white women, and black women; this condition may partially account for sex and race wage gaps. In examining generational differences, the conclusion is that societal sanctions and supports determine which behaviors and attitudes are likely to be perpetuated. Research in progress examines women faculty, barriers to medical school, male and female physicians, male/female friendships, dual career roles, and marital adjustment. Research needs include investigation into the mechanisms which perpetuate occupational segregation and into the impact of different work-family arrangements on the family and the individual.
