Alberta Assessment of School Mathematics. A Study Conducted for the Minister's Advisory Committee on Student Achievement. Condensed Report.
Olson, A. T.; And Others
This is a condensed report of a study commissioned by the Minister's Advisory Committee on Student Achievement (MACOSA). The study was designed to provide information about current levels of achievement in mathematics among students in Alberta schools and to provide a data base for future assessments. The test was given to third-, sixth-, ninth-, and twelfth-grade students in a 10% random sample of schools. Performance in number facts and computation was satisfactory at all grade levels, but performances in problem solving, geometry, measurement, and consumer mathematics, were unsatisfactory. Boys performed better than girls on all aspects of mathematics and this difference increased as grade level increased. School size also showed a relationship to achievement differences. Fourteen recommendations to MACOSA are reported. (MK)
