A survey of 3,195 junior and senior students at 11 Ocean County high schools was conducted by Ocean County College (OCC) to determine students' post-secondary aspirations, student attitudes toward OCC, and the television and radio stations most popular among area high school students. Data, collected on a questionnaire distributed to English and history classes chosen by random or stratified random techniques, showed that 60% planned to attend college; 23% said that they "may attend" OCC, while 48% said they definitely would not. A total of 27 radio stations was mentioned by the students; channels 7, 4, and 2 of New York were the most popular television stations. The primary reasons for not wanting to attend OCC were: the desire to attend a four-year college (12.2%), lack of desired program at OCC (12.2%), unfamiliarity with OCC (10.2%), and the desire to live away from home (8.5%). Primary reasons for wanting to attend OCC were location (7.9%), "right college for me" (7.4%), OCC reputation (4.2%), and "good college if undecided" (4.1%). The college programs most preferred by all respondents and by those desiring to or undecided about attending OCC were transfer programs including business, fine/applied arts, education, health professions, and engineering.
