Research will be conducted which will investigate the process by which individuals gain access to careers. (Career is defined as empirically determined regularities in job sequences.) The research program is organized around two phases of analysis. The first phase involves empirically constructing multi-dimensional career lines through extensive synthetic cohort analysis of the 1970 Census Public Use Samples. The outcome will be a large number of empirically linked job sequences that describe changes and stabilities in the jobs of men and women that are formed by institutional and labor market structure. The concepts and career line information from the first phase will serve as the major dependent variables for the second phase of the study, which will investigate how individuals gain access to careers through entry portals through ages 18-30. The second phase involves measures of life-course concepts that affect an individual's access to careers. The sample to be used includes 6,795 males and females who were juniors and seniors in public high schools in the state of Washington from 1965-66. The data from each individual's life-course history will be interfaced with the career line information through the match of individual jobs and career line entry portals. The complementary data will provide the variation in individual access to a career line that can predict, model, and explain. Areas of policy significance have been identified, and plans for disseminating the information have been outlined. (BM)
