Integrating Asian American Curriculum into the Classroom.
Kumagai, Gloria
Since materials are scarce, textbooks are incomplete, and teacher training is inadequate, teachers need ongoing assistance and training in integrating Asian American curriculum into their classrooms. A federally-funded project that is currently in its second year of operation in the St. Paul Public Schools is attempting to meet this need. The inservice training model and curriculum model utilized in the project are helping teachers eliminate many of the myths and stereotypes about Asian Americans, and the skills developed in project workshops are helping them to integrate Asian American studies into all areas of curriculum. In general, it can be said that results from the primary and high school levels indicate that the inservice training of teachers and providing them with the time to develop new curriculum materials has a positive effect on students' attitudes toward Asian Americans.
