Do Finns and Swedish-Speaking Finns Use Different Strategies in the Learning of English as a Foreign Language? Perception and Production of English: Papers on Interlanguage. AFTIL, Volume 6.
Sjoholm, Kaj
A multiple-choice test of English vocabulary and grammar was administered to college-bound Swedish-speaking and Finnish-speaking students studying English in Finland. Erroneous responses were analyzed to determine differences in learning strategies between the two groups. Swedish speakers were found to choose incorrect alternatives based on characteristics of their native language much more often than Finnish speakers. The latter showed the greater tendency to choose over-generalizing alternatives. Possible reasons for the differences in language learning strategies that are reflected in these results are discussed. The multiple choice test is appended. (JB)
