Following an overview of the need for evaluation training, the Analysis of Evaluation Training Materials Project is described and the coverage, methodology, and usability of materials available for training educational personnel in evaluation skills are considered. Problem areas in evaluation, identified by the National Institute of Education (NIE), are being addressed through the preparation of a two-volume guide, the "Guide to Evaluation Training Materials." Volume I is a compilation of materials developed with federal funds, and volume 2 includes materials from a wide variety of sources which were selected, based on a conceptual map characterizing areas of evaluation and their interrelationships. The two-volume guide is considered useful for: (1) providing comparative data on evaluation and training materials; (2) indicating the variety of producers of materials, such as national, state, or local education agencies; professional associations; private research and development agencies, institutes, or centers; academic institutions; and consultants; (3) exemplifying which aspects of evaluation are being covered; (4) indicating the audience for these materials; and (5) analyzing methods appropriate for teaching evaluation. A list of products reviewed in the two-volume guide is appended, as well as the review formats and examples. (MH)
