The Educational Community: Building the Climate for Collaboration.
Schindler-Rainman, Eva; And Others
The results of a two-day skill laboratory on creating community support for educational change is reported in eight chapters. Participants focused on creative solutions to problems of school-community relations. Four concerns identified included the need to 1) recognize the pressures for accountability procedures and reports; 2) collaborate with community agencies which have responsibilities and services related to children and the family; 3) develop resourcefulness in responding to and getting support of groups with conflicting ideas about educational priorities; and 4) use nonprofessional human resources in providing educational services to children. Chapter I summarizes the activity of the workshop. Chapter II examines current and future social trends affecting school-community relations. Chapter III lists community interest groups and suggests ways to initiate collaboration. Chapter IV focuses on the necessity and functions of school advisory committees. Chapter V discusses the role of volunteers in the school, with an emphasis on duties, and on recruiting, screening, dismissing, and organizing. Chapter VI suggests methods for working with differences and conflicts. Chapter VII identifies strategies for group maintenance and support for change teams, organizations, and committees. Chapter VIII presents specific tools for action. Included are: an image of potentiality exercise; methods and forms for force-field diagnosis; methods and forms for an action plan; techniques for brainstorming and consultation in the round; forms for planning a meeting; and procedures for personalized skill practice.
