The Research, Evaluation and Measurement Dragons in Outdoor Education.
Staley, Frederick A.
A model for research and evaluation in outdoor education is presented in this paper which includes a bibliography of representative research in outdoor, experiential education. The model stresses close interaction between program designers and evaluators and rests on the premise that the strength of outdoor education--interaction between people, activities, and the outdoors--is best measured using sociological, holistic, alternative evaluation methodologies. A bibliography of approximately 100 entries is organized under the heading of representative research, evaluation studies, noteworthy studies combining research and evaluation, literature reviews, development and use of specific measurement instruments, and recommendations for needed research and program evaluation designs. A list of 77 available measurement instruments follows with reference to the bibliography articles reporting their use. Instruments are organized by the variable measured; headings include participant behavior, creativity, hemisphericity, attitudes and values, and comprehension and cognition. Conclusions and recommendations focus on the need to develop alternative research paradigms appropriate for outdoor education and suggest possibilities for studying right hemisphere activity in relation to outdoor education experiences.
