An Experimental Training Program for Head Start Teachers and Assistants: A Report at the End of the Third Year of a Continuing Project. Summary.
Nimnicht, Glen P.; And Others
This report describes the implementation of a training program designed to help Head Start teachers and assistants use the Responsive Model Head Start program in their classroom. Teachers trained at five locations in California with workshops and inservice training units, were required to study materials, videotape themselves with children, and mail the videotapes for critique. Experimental training programs for 1967-68, 1968-69, and 1969-70 are described in detail. The first year's experimental program focused on the implementation of the on-site training program. To measure teacher change a teacher rating scale was developed. The second year's experimental program focused on the introduction of Program Advisors (PAs) into the training program. Information collected in eight Head Start communities that implemented the Responsive Model during the 1968-69 school year is presented. The third year was a field test of the first year's training program. The procedure of having Laboratory staff members train PAs who in turn trained 10 teachers and their assistants was continued. Two assessment instruments were developed: the Responsive Self-Concept Test and the Responsive Achievement Test. Fourth year program objectives are listed and discussed. Workshop and inservice training units are outlined and related program materials, including a guide to using the Responsive Model Observation Schedule, are appended. (Author/RH)
