The Writing-in-Chicago Program of the Chicago Public Library. An Evaluation.
Rayward, W. Boyd
An experimental writing program lasting three years and four months was held in the Chicago Public Library System, for which writers-in-residence, scholars-in- residence, and other program associates presented several series focusing on the city of Chicago. Emphasis during the first year centered on the literary/historical aspect of writing in and about Chicago, and later expanded to include the process of writing in specific genres, as well as the work of special groups. Although differing opinions and emphases on administrative details were evidenced between project and branch staffs, participants in the Writing-in-Chicago Program were very enthusiastic, used the library and cultural center more, and traveled a longer distance to attend sessions than participants in other programs. Concerns of the project director were publicity, whether to give academic credit for courses, and the relationship of his office to the branches; however, the main goal, to provide interested citizens with access to scholars and professional writers in a library atmoshere, was reached. Recommendations were to continue writing workshops and Wild Onion (literary) Festivals, solicit external funding, and create a permanent position of coordinator of library programs. A narrative account of the program, description of academic components, learner questionnaire, interview guides, and relevant correspondence are appended. (SW)
