Put Your Degree to Work. A Career-Planning and Job-Hunting Guide for the New Professional.
Fox, Marcia R.
Career planning and job hunting for graduate students are discussed in this book. In Chapter One important career planning activities during graduate study are discussed including: academic advisement, assessment of career goals, and obtaining practical experience. Steps for conducting an effective job search are detailed in Chapter Two. The importance of clarifying job objectives; utilizing on-campus recruiting resources; the effective use of contacts, letters, and resumes; and special advice for conducting an out-of-state job search are discussed. Characteristics of an effective resume are examined in detail in Chapter Three. The discussion includes advice on resume content, appearance, and specificity. Recommendations for overcoming special resume "problems" such as previous firings and lengthy periods of unemployment are included. A section is also devoted to women who are returning to work after an extended absence. Similar information is provided about cover letters in Chapter Four. The importance of a well-written cover letter in gaining an interview is emphasized and advice on style and appearance is included. The final chapter discusses the job interview and offers advice on preparation and presentation. Psychological aspects of the interview procedure are examined and it is suggested that proper preparation can help overcome anxiety and insure a positive experience. Although the book is geared toward helping the graduate student make a successful transition from student to professional, the advice may also be applicable to undergraduate job seekers. (SF)
