Star Power: Providing for the Gifted & Talented. Module 8. Gifted and Talented Students Among Other Educationally Disadvantaged Groups.
Duke, Elizabeth
The document presents Module 8, gifted and talented students among educationally disadvanted groups, of the Star Power modules developed for school personnel who have an interest in or a need to explore the area of gifted and talented education. It is explained in an introductory section that the modules can be used for independent study, for small group interaction, or for a large group inservice program. The goals of this module are to discover the wealth of ability and talent among culturally different, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and female students and to help them develop their potential. Sections include the following: enabling objectives (such as use appropriate methods to locate gifted/talented students among the minorities, the poor, and females); rationale to establish a frame of reference; preassessment tests and evaluation; instructions for scoring the preassessment instrument; activities (which include trying the Torrance Checklist of Creative Positives with at least five students and planning units in Black literature, Mexican American literature, and/or literature by women); and postassessment procedures.
