Teaching Early Childhood: Exceptional Educational Needs. Ten Resource Modules.
Melcher, John; And Others
Developed by the Wisconsin State Early Childhood: Exceptional Educational Needs Project, the manual presents 10 modules designed to aid in the professional development of teachers of young handicapped children. Each module describes its purpose, goals, and objectives, and presents activities and a list of resources. The Screening module covers such aspects as developing a screening program, the selection of reliable and valid screening instruments, implementing a preschool screening program, and interpreting and explaining screening results. Another module provides information about assessment instruments, the interpretation of assessment results, the relationship between assessment and education intervention, and the role of various professions in educational assessment. The Curricular Strategies module is intended to help the teacher make an informed choice about which strategy or approach to use in a given situation, while the Instructional Activities module focuses on organizing instruction into activities that are appropriate for each individual child. Other modules deal with the selection, modification, use, and evaluation of instructional materials; the incorporation of parents into the planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating phases of their child's individualized program; the recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating of paraprofessionals and volunteers; interagency cooperation; administrative aspects; and teacher self-improvement.
