Objectives of Youth Advisory Services.
World Health Organization, Copenhagen (Denmark). Regional Office for Europe.
Professionals concerned with youth advisory services from 10 countries met to exchange appropriate experiences and information on their role, organizations and operations, especially within the framework of other community services. Changes in their roles and objectives received special attention to determine possibilities for prevention and early detection of physical and mental illness. Youth advisory services in all European countries have become an accepted and necessary community service, fitting into the existing network of social services. Mental illness detection and prevention constitute a major endeavor. Broad objectives were agreed upon, but specifics need more precision and reappraisal, as does partnership with other youth services. Local, national and international youth advisory service coordination and collaboration vary greatly in their stages of development. Constraints, especially concerning innovation and finance, are considerable. Research and evaluation are recognized as important. Needs and the activities serving them demand flexibility and continuing reassessment. Youth advisory services can create social change and assist in comprehensive mental health strategy. (Author/LS)
