Law-Citizenship Education Curriculum Guide: A Scope and Sequence Approach for Kindergarten through Grade Eight.
Eyster, Ira, Ed.
The guide presents learning activities and teaching methods relating to law and citizenship education for grades K-8. The objective is to aid the teacher in preparing students for citizenship responsibilities. The document treats five basic topics, liberty, justice, equality, property, and power, and is designed for adaptation into existing curriculum. It is divided into four sections. Section I, providing learning activities for grades K-3, outlines purposes and activities; contains educational objectives; and suggests activities such as viewing filmstrips, discussing, brainstorming, and gaming. Activities are limited to simple definitions and activities emphasizing conceptual learning. Sections II and III are aimed at grades 4-6 and 7-8 respectively. They explore the same topics by using activities and sources of growing complexity and sophistication. Section II uses creative writing, dramatization, case studies, and field investigation to examine the topics and relate them to subject matter such as American history and government, legal terms and processes, historical documents, and court systems. Section III recommends films, court cases, textbooks, comparative analysis, and opinion polls for use in studying controversial issues relating to the basic topics. Section IV is an appendix offering teacher materials and detailing objectives and procedures for teaching strategies to stimulate discussion and student involvement. A bibliography concludes the document (CK)
