Competency Evaluation and Expectations of the Public Comprehensive Community College Librarian; A National Survey of Chief Instructional Officers.
Wallace, Angelo
The chief instructional officers (CIO's) of 751 public comprehensive community colleges were surveyed to determine their perceptions of the skills and competencies necessary for junior college librarians. Respondents were asked to indicate both the desired and actual level of competency of their campus librarians in the areas of: (1) knowledge of books and printed materials; (2) knowledge of audio-visual materials; (3) library automation; (4) human relations and personnel administration; (5) the community college environment; (6) the college curriculum; and (7) community relations. Their responses were compared with previous research surveying perceptions of college librarians in similar competency areas. Data were also collected on such institutional characteristics as age of the school, enrollments, programs, faculty size, accreditation, and size of the library staff to determine if any relationship existed between the responses of the CIO and institutional characteristics. Findings indicated that the CIO's in older, accredited two-year colleges with small faculty and library staff placed greater importance on basic core subjects, i.e., knowledge of books and printed materials. The CIO's in newer, larger institutions placed greater emphasis on audio-visual materials, library automation, and the college curriculum. A review of related research is included and the survey instrument is appended. (DR)
