Designed for educational psychologists, the paper discusses the range of tests used for assessing visually handicapped children. Specific tests used in Britain for preschool children (including the Williams Intelligence Test for Children with Defective Vision and the Social Maturity Scale for Blind Pre-school Children) and for school aged children (including the Barraga Visual Efficiency Scale and the Look and Think Checklist) are analyzed. Problems with standardized intelligence tests and psychological measures are examined. Tests for assessing tactual reading skills and mathematics skills by visually handicapped children are recommended. Visual acuity and age of onset of visual impairment are explained to be important variables in assessment of the visually handicapped. (CL)
