New Tools for Precision Journalists: Using Stems and Leaves, Boxes and Whiskers--and a Few Flogs--to Describe Recent Trends in Journalism Graduates.
McElreath, Mark P.
Graphic statistics as developed by John Tukey have some practical benefits for precision journalists as they assist in spotting trends not as easily noted without the use of nonparametric statistics. Some especially helpful graphic statistics are: "stem-and-leaf display,""box plots,""froots," and "flogs." These can be used to see relationships in statistics related to data from surveys of journalism graduates, including information about salary ranges, job search time, time on the job market as related to year of graduation or to sex, and number of journalism graduates with specific majors. (Fifteen tables are included to show how the statistical techniques were applied to the survey data.) (TJ)
