The 106 community colleges in California were surveyed by questionnaire to determine their current level of commitment to the aged in terms of programs and courses available, adult participation, and methods used to conduct programs. Eighty-three questionnaires (78%) were returned. Of the responding colleges, 43% were currently offering classes or programs for retired persons, 34% specifically selected retired persons for advisory groups, and 82% had faculty or administrative personnel specially designated to work and plan in this area. Sixty percent had cooperated with other community agencies in offering programs, and 60% had used some form of publicity to communicate with the retired community. Instructional offerings ranged from one or two classes to large programs with specialized curricula. The most popular course offerings included estate planning, health and nutrition, tax preparation, budget management, and physical fitness, but few courses were offered in traditional credit areas of the college curriculum, such as math or English. Responding colleges indicated that Proposition 13 was the greatest single reason for discontinuing programs for the aged and retired. Results of a similar survey conducted in 1972 are discussed and the 1978 survey instrument is appended. (DR)
