The history and influence of the Faculty Committee for Self-Governance, a group formed to oppose any form of unionization at New York University (NYU), are examined. The group was initially formed to support the "no representative" position in collective bargaining elections held in 1973-1974, and later opposed unionization again in elections held in 1976. Surveys were conducted following both union elections to determine factors and conditions affecting voting behavior, to compare these factors with what is known about collective bargaining in higher education, and to identify within NYU faculty groups of individuals who may have supported unionization and groups who may have opposed it. The majority of voters reported that the Faculty Committee for Self-Governance influenced them in both elections. Those faculty members and librarians reporting positive influence voted no representative; those indicating negative influence voted for the union organization. Those not influenced by the committee voted no representative by about a two to one margin. There were no statistically significant differences among the three influence groups on faculty demographic and professional characteristics often associated with collective bargaining except for school of appointment in the 1976 election. Strong associations exist among faculty vote, degree of satisfaction with conditions, and influence of the Committee. (SC)
