Approaching the Comparison of Competing Studies.
Ternent, William A.
This paper addresses the problems posed by the staggering volume of research in human communication and by vital supportive studies in social and behavioral sciences, as well as the difficulties in comparing competing studies to determine greatest usefulness and merit. The paper describes an approach to the systematic consideration and evaluation of competing research that focuses on improving the internal structuring of certain segments of the review of research literature--such as the sorting and classification of documents based on the researcher's focus, range of convenience, and the purpose and nature of the reported research, as well as the comparison and analysis of competing studies.
