Proceedings are presented of hearings before the Subcommittee on Oversight of the Committee on Ways and Means in the House of Representatives. The purpose of the hearings was to review the Social Security student benefit program to determine whether the program is still necessary. Testimony was received from the General Accounting Office, which had completed an extensive review of the program and its beneficiaries. Also testifying were representatives of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, which administers the Social Security student program as well as the basic educational grants program; the American Council on Education, which represents postsecondary institutions; and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States.
