The regional and historical overview of race, caste, and prejudice is one of the units in the Anthropology Curriculum Project series. The major objective of the unit is to focus attention on discriminatory practices which grow out of physical differences and cultural attitudes. The document consists of teacher background materials and a student handbook. The teacher text is presented in three chapters. Chapter I defines race and explores the relationship between race and prejudice. Chapter II discusses social class and caste. Topics discussed include social status in open and closed societies, social stratification in different cultures (Japan, India, Europe, and the United States), and the effect of class on life chances. Chapter III relates prejudice to ethnocentrism and presents case studies of prejudice against religious, ethnic, and racial groups including blacks in the United States, Mormons, Jews, Chinese in Indonesia and Malaysia, Indians in Africa, and the Ibo in Nigeria. The student handbook is organized into four main categories--activities, recall questions, discussion questions, and a glossary with a suggested reading guide for the text. Activities involve students in interviewing community members, role playing, analyzing newspaper and magazine articles, analyzing hate literature, investigating prejudice in employment and housing, and working with peers of another ethnic group.
