Course Goals in Social Science, K-12. Volume I [And] Volume II.
Peters, Linda, Ed.; And Others
The volumes present goals for use in planning and evaluating elementary and secondary school social studies curricula. The book is intended to help social studies classroom teachers identify learning goals. Organized according to major social science disciplines, the two-volume series is presented in six sections. Section I introduces the collection, identifies general objectives, and explains codes and symbols. Sections II and III focus on social science and career education program goals including a need for students to value diversity in human cultures and be able to discover the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to carry out career decisions. Section IV outlines knowledge, process, and value classifications used in the guide. Categories include acquiring information, insuring validity, organizing and interpreting information, acting on the basis of information, coping with the environment, and increasing personal effectiveness. Section V presents a taxonomy of major social science concepts. Section VI, the bulk of the document, presents social studies course goals by social science disciplines in tabular form. For major topics within each discipline, information is presented on goals, grade level, knowledge or process classification, subject area goals, career education goals, related headings in the taxonomy presented in section V and major concepts and vocabulary.
