Part I discusses the labor force in terms of supply and demand, the working age population, the labor force participation rate, total employment, unemployment, and seasonal adjustments in the unemployment rate. Part II explores the changing nature of Canada's labor market. Growth factors such as the Post World War II baby boom, the increasing number of women in the labor force, and immigration patterns are analyzed. Current demands for labor, service industries, and employment trends through a recession are also discussed. Part III considers issues and policies. One major issue concerns determining who the unemployed are. Seasonal factors, regional differences, and employment patterns of young people are noted as important elements in analyzing the unemployment rate. Issues surrounding the revised (1971) Unemployment Insurance Act and indirect and direct effects of government policies on employment are also discussed.
