Team-Teaching of Subject-Specific English to Overseas Postgraduate Students.
Johns, T. F.; And Others
A description of team-teaching at the English for Overseas Students Unit (EOSU) of the University of Birmingham, by T. F. Johns and Tony Dudley-Evans, is followed by "The Current Programme of Materials Development in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at the Universities of Birmingham and Aston" by T. F. and C. M. Johns. The team-teaching program for foreign postgraduate students in plant biology, development administration, and transportation involves joint classroom presentations by an EOSU teacher and a subject specialist. The first term emphasizes global understanding, understanding of detail, and vocabulary. The second term introduces students to answering essay questions in their subect area. Courses described herein that are offered to foreign post graduate students of widely differing backgrounds by the EAP program include an intensive presessional course, pronunciation, remedial grammar, spelling and word formation, note-taking and note reconstitution, structured dialogues, academic writing, listening comprehension, seminar strategies, overseas development administration texts, technical English, and language in the classroom.
