The "ACCEPT" Model: A Community and Career Education Process for Training the Handicapped: An Approach for Use by Regional Educational Service Agencies (RESAs) with Trainable and Educable Retarded Students.
Potter, Jerome T.; And Others
The paper describes the "ACCEPT" (A Community and Career Education Process for Training the Handicapped) Model, designed to deliver career education services to lower-functioning handicapped children (trainable mentally retarded, moderately multi-handicapped, and variations of functional retardation regardless of primary disability) ages 3-21 years. The model is explained to have five major components--comprehensive needs assessments of target populations, design of coordinated training and awareness models, implementation of training and awareness models, development of mechanisms for coordination of available community resources, and dissemination of the results and model processes of the project. Sections address the following areas: populations to be served, review of previous efforts, 14 major objectives of the model (presented in table form) with subordinate objectives and activities), staffing at three levels (administrative, program, and secretarial), staff development, record keeping systems, identification and assessment of handicapped children, instructional intervention, (an essential element being the use of intensive task analysis techniques), parent-family participation, and dissemination.
