This annual statistical report describes conditions in education and conditions in the larger society that affect education. Statistical data are presented on issues concerning educational institutions, participants, and personnel. The report is organized to reflect the characteristics of the educational system and its relationship to the larger society. The first section of this report describes trends and developments affecting education at all levels. Chapter 1 discusses such issues as the family, work, and the community in an effort to describe the societal context of education. Chapter 2 covers such facets of elementary and secondary education as enrollment, progress through school, school environment, and teachers. Chapter 3 examines postsecondary education, including occupational and adult education, and students, instructional faculty, and finance in higher education. In the second section of the report special topics have been selected for closer analysis. Chapter 4 looks at the financing of elementary and secondary education, chapter 5 examines outcomes of education, and chapter 6 explores the status of minorities and women in higher education.
