The development and validation of the Multidimensional-Multiattributional Causality Scales (MMCS) are described. The scales are distinctive because they measure locus of control specific to two goals--achievement and affiliation. Half of the items concern success, and half concern failure experiences. Results of four validity studies with under graduates demonstrated some discriminant validity of the MMCS. The affiliation scale predicted self-disclosure when conditions called for disclosure. It was related to the demonstration of listening skills in a dyadic interaction, and to recalled early life changes. The achievement scale failed to predict affiliation, but was related to body indications of discomfort during an achievement task, presented in a way that was assumed to be highly disruptive to persons with internal locus of control expectancies. Of the three achievement and affiliation subscales--ability, context, and effort--the latter was a powerful predictor of goal persistence. Except for study four, affiliation was a more frequent predictor for females, while achievement was a more frequent predictor for males. These studies supported the theoretical position that goal specific expectancies override generalized expectancies as predictors of the relevant behavior, when subjects have had experience with the given goal or situation.
