Innovation in Secondary Education in Europe.
Wake, R. A.; And Others
The document consists of three articles by European educational experts on recent trends in secondary education within the member nations of Europe's Council for Cultural Co-operation. The first article, "Interdisciplinarity in Secondary Education," focuses on the tendencies to underestimate the complex managerial side of interdisciplinary work. Topics discussed include the need to differentiate between convenience and conviction in interdisciplinary studies, objectives and management of interdisciplinary courses, establishing links between subjects, and treatment of a concept such as resources as an interdisciplinary topic. The second article, "Autonomous Work by Pupils," is available as ED 141 358. Developments are discussed and assessed which have encouraged students to participate in charting their own educational experiences. The third article, "The Introduction of New Elements of Knowledge into Upper Secondary Education," focuses on recent changes in curriculum and teaching methods, including introduction of nonacademic subjects such as ecology and data processing, student participation in course selection, increased efforts to make content relevant to students' concerns, and increased acceptance of students' vernacular as an adequate means of communication.
