Classroom Planning and Programming.
Karnes, Merle B.; And Others
This manual, based on procedures used in the PEECH (Precise Early Education for Children with Handicaps) Project, is designed to aid classroom teachers of preschool handicapped children. Chapter 1 discusses planning time and space and presents the essential elements of a PEECH daily schedule. Chapter 2 defines and states the purpose of classroom assessment activities. Classroom assessment instruments are listed and copies of midyear and end of year reports are provided. Chapter 3 identifies and discusses the legislatively required components of individualized educational programs (IEPs). A 4-stage process for developing IEPs is pointed out. Use of child assessment data to identify the child's needs and present performance is emphasized. A sample completed IEP form for one student in seven instructional areas is given. Chapter 4 provides guides to curriculum development. Task and goal analysis, lesson plans and presentations, and educational procedures for severely handicapped children are discussed. One bibliography of behavior principles, applications and manuals, and another of commercially available curricula for young children are appended. Chapter 5 surveys the characteristics and components of the PEECH recordkeeping system. Sample records are appended. Chapter 6 provides guides for behavior management, including ways to deal with inappropriate behaviors. A short, annotated and prioritized list of books on behavior management is offered. (RH)
