The handbook focuses on the accessibility of facilities to handicapped individuals. General information on accessibility requirements mandated by law is provided. Information on state and local legislation on architectural barriers gives suggestions for where to write to find out what laws apply where. Definitions of terms such as accessible, barrier free, and usable are given; as well as a listing of conditions that create the need for an accessible environment. Minimum accessibility requirements for buildings are identified and federal funding for removal of barriers is discussed. Addresses of organizations with local chapters that may be able to assist in planning alternative ways of achieving accessibility are provided. The elements of an accessible system, including modifications in existing facilities, are listed as follows: parking, curb cuts, walkways, ramps, entrances, doors, floors, corridors, elevators, stairs, toilet rooms, and convenience and support facilities (such as drinking fountains and alarm signals).
