This report examines the role played by the school in the transmission of stereotypic attitudes. Educators, consciously or unconsciously, prefer that their students conform to accepted behaviors. Their preferences reinforce behavior patterns already learned by the children at home. But the stereotypes are transmitted not only through the students' observation of their teachers' behaviors, but also through the students' reading of the texts and supplementary instructional materials of the curricula. All instructional materials should be evaluated carefully to assess the effect they may have on the students. Teaching methods should be avoided which reinforce the stereotyping of sexes, and new role models should be introduced. An analysis of a mathematics text and a language arts text shows the prevalence of sex stereotypes in instructional materials. An examination of differences in language used by and to men and women shows that women tend to reinforce the stereotypes which work against their interests. Recommendations are made for ways in which sexism may be eliminated both from the society as a whole and from the school in particular. A discussion guide is provided for organizers of workshops set up to examine the issue of sexism in education and society. (MC)
