Approaches to Measurement in Religious Education.
Davies, Richard E.
This state of the art review discusses approaches to the measurement of theological concepts, and briefly describes the purpose and limitations of selected tests in the following areas: religious knowledge (mainly biblical knowledge); theological belief; religiosity--observable religious activity; religious experience--mystical experience; and character or morality. Ordinal measurement techniques are recommended for constructing one's own tests of religious attitudes and knowledge, as an alternative to objective and essay tests. Each item can be scored on an ordinal scale in one of two response styles: Likert (agree, disagree, undecided) and semantic differential (bipolar adjectives, such as strong/weak, active/passive). Two tests are appended: the Concept Evaluation Test, and What Do You Believe? (CP)
