Organizing the Environment for Art Instruction. Grades K-12.
Wisconsin State Dept. of Public Instruction, Madison. Div. of Instructional Services.
The guide offers information on art to help school administrators adapt the instructional environment so that it will enhance art education in grades K-12. It is presented in nine sections. Section I reviews and suggests ways of improving the status of art in the general curriculum. This section indicates that art education status is generally quite low and that it can be improved by hiring qualified art teachers, giving equal credit in art, and developing a statewide art curriculum guide. Section II discusses time, scheduling, and staffing for art instruction. Section III identifies the professional qualifications which art educators should have. Sections IV and V describe roles and responsibilities of administrators and art supervisors. Section V explains how art teachers and teacher aides can contribute to student knowledge about and appreciation of art. Sections VI and VII discuss budgetary, financial, and equipment concerns of art education programs. The final chapter examines the need for audio-visual resources and explains how these resources can be developed, rented, or acquired at nominal cost. (DB)
