This report brings together the many findings gathered during a three-year study of the 8,979 students who entered Hawaii's seven community colleges in fall 1975. Study results are organized in the following sections: (1) selected highlights from the literature and description of the flow project; (2) characteristics of entering students and "no shows"; (3) registration, continuation, and full-time rates, credit-completion ratios, and changes of major of enrolled students; (4) non-continuing student characteristics and the results of non-continuing student surveys which considered current occupational and educational activities and reasons for not returning; (5) graduate characteristics, results of alumni surveys which focused on post-graduation employment and educational activities and evaluation of the college experience and services offered, and comparison of graduates and non-returning students; (6) progression and persistence findings organized by student characteristics and continuing student survey responses; (7) results of efforts to identify the potential dropout; (8) conclusions and recommendations in areas affecting retention--college philosophy, instruction and instructors, and student personnel services--and college program and services--student-college match, student success, and institutional success.
