This brief, semi-technical handbook describes the various data systems of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) with summaries of background, purpose and scope, sample design, data collection procedures, questionnaire content, data release, and data uses for individual NCHS surveys. NCHS operates a diverse survey and inventory program that encompasses its legislative authorization to collect statistics on (1) the extent and nature of illness and disability of the population of the United States; (2) the impact of illness and disability of the population on the economy of the United States and on other aspects of the well-being of its population; (3) health resources; (4) utilization of health care; (5) health care costs and financing; and (6) family formation, growth, and dissolution. This summary is intended to serve the needs of visitors to the NCHS, as well as those of others at the federal, state, and local levels who need to understand the structure and scope of its programs.
