Resources for Renewal: Liberal Education for Work and Leisure.
Reagin, Ewell J.
A cooperative project of Warren Wilson College, North Carolina, the College for Human Services, New York, and Merrimack Valley Branch/University of New Hampshire on the topic of leisure and liberal education is described. The project is part of "Change in Liberal Education," a network concerned with the renewal of liberal education. The colleges formed a task force and conducted a workshop on the future of work, leisure, and education. Participants from colleges, government, industry, and labor identified a set of themes indicating the broad perspective necessary to understand relations between the world of work and the institutions of education. The themes are as follows: the increase in potency of individual choice in learning and work; the redistribution of power and opportunity and the means for acquiring power and opportunity; and the whole person rather than one-dimensional persons. The report includes: a short description of the three participating colleges as an indication of their alternative approaches to the relationship between work and higher education; historical information on the relationship between higher education and its role in American society; a recommendation for alternative approaches in liberal education; and an annotated bibliography.
