This paper presents a number of hypotheses concerned with individual learning strategies based on a pre-experimental, observational case study. Three children (two seven-year-olds and one eleven-year-old) native speakers of Hebrew were the subjects of the study. The language data collected from them consisted of spontaneous speech about their everyday activities. The study presented here centers around two main issues: (1) the construction of an index of development based on the acquisition of the progressive form in English; and (2) the development of an index of evaluation for individual learning strategies. Samples of indexes are given in the paper, supported by the data observed in the study. It is suggested that such indexes be developed for each of the various sets of factors affecting second language learning in order to arrive at a more global learning profile. (Author/AMH)
