Described in this paper is the educational background and schooling experienced by Haitian immigrant children who are presently enrolled in the New York school system. Different types of schools in Haiti (urban, rural, private, public, elementary and secondary), and the functions of these schools in Haitian society are examined. Other topics discussed include the school community, competition for school admission, the classroom context, the learning process, teacher-student relationships, parent-student relationships, parent-teacher relationships and the Haitian perception of schooling. Factors considered include school structure, teacher qualifications, entrance exams, discipline, home environment, and the use of French at all levels of instruction. (EB)
