This report reviews the first two years and describes the second two years of a Brooklyn College experimental project which offered special instructional and support services to a group of economically disadvantaged students with below standard high school achievement, but an academic potential for college work. The student recruitment process for the program is outlined, and special academic features, counseling, and progress assessment methods are detailed. The report describes the program as a success in terms of an unexpectedly low attrition rate, the probable number of graduates, the program's effect on the students and faculty, and its influence on the College's subsequent welcome to disadvantaged students. Some of the problems encountered are discussed, as are the criticisms of the project and the ways in which it might have been improved. Several other subsequent discretionary admissions programs are briefly described. (Author/WI)
